Announcements
- Final and course marks are posted on virtual campus. The final exam was curved; the mark you see under the 'Final' column is a percentage,
not the number of correct points you earned. Your course letter
grade is also featured in the gradebook. Several things to
remember concerning course marks:
- Your final exam percentage, if it is greater, can replace at most one of your homework, midterm I, or midterm II percentages.
- Any final exam percentage below 50% results in a
failing grade (E or F) for the course, regardless of homework or
midterm scores. That is, the weighting scheme (50% final, 20%
midterms, 10% homework) was only used if you scored 50% or higher on
the final exam.
- Here is an exam information document containing helpful exam information, links to old midterms, study suggestions, and material to be covered.
- The math drop-in centre's special hours for the exam period (Dec 5 to 18) are Monday to Friday 10 to 5.
- Homework assignments 7 and 8 will be returned during class this
Tuesday, December 2. If you have any remaining assignments that
you have not picked up, you can get them from me on Thursday, December
4, from 12:30 - 2:30 pm, in my office.
- All homework solutions are posted (below); all marks are entered in virtual campus.
- FINAL EXAM REVIEW SESSION. We will have a 2-hour review
session for our final exam; Thursday, December 4, 9:30 - 11:30 am, MNT
202.
- Two announcements concerning homework.
- Homework 9 will not be collected. There is insufficient
time to ensure that you would receive the marked assignment back on
Tuesday.
- Your lowest homework score of the term will be dropped.
- A small correction to homework 9. The (3,3)
entry of the 3 x 3 matrix in problem 3a) should be a -2 instead of a 2.
If you download now, you will have the correct version. If
you have already downloaded, please correct your version.
- Homework 9 is now posted.
- Problems for this Thursday's (November 20) DGD can be found here.
- Today in class I was unable to finish the proof that the
column space of a matrix C and the nullspace of its transpose are
orthogonal subspaces. Thanks to our fellow student Bhavaye Saxena
for telling me after class how this is done! The proof can be found here.
- I have changed the list of 'sample problems' to the list of
'suggested problems'. Please take a look at the list below to see
some additions w/ problems involving matrix inverses, projections, and
orthogonality.
- Solutions to midterm II:
- Homework 8 is now posted.
- MIDTERM II ANNOUNCEMENTS:
- SOLUTIONS for the practice homework are posted.
- Here is a practice homework
for the midterm. 'Practice' just means that we will not collect
it - it is essential that you understand the stuff on this assignment
prior to taking this midterm.
- Here is some important information concerning the midterm, including some midterms from previous years (for practice). In particular, note that everyone must bring their student IDs to the midterm.
- The classroom in which YOUR midterm will take place will be determined
by your last name:

begins with the letters.... |
then you will take
